Chessguessr – Wordle for Chess Games
- halfjoking 4y agoi like it. I just think it’s a bit annoying to re-enter the moves you got correct last guess. It should reset to start, and animate the ones you got correct automatically and give a big X when you come to the wrong guess. It would be a more interactive reveal.
- Assioss 4y agoThanks, good idea! I can see some cases where you don't necessarily want to play the same correct 3 moves – if you just want to test a bunch of other moves to get more information (yellow/greys). But there could be a button to automatically play the moves you've already gotten right.
- makoto12 4y agoI dunno hey. It doesn't really make sense to have puzzles as a wordle. Because there should be one correct solution from the outset. The chess wordle to guess the opening makes much more sense in the context of wordle games https://jackli.gg/chessle/ https://jackli.gg/chessle/
- shric 4y agoIt's not a puzzle, it's taken from a game, so the sequence isn't necessarily always the strongest moves
- makoto12 4y agooh fair enough. concept still a bit weird for me. not sure why i want to be guessing suboptimal moves from a position. But i should play it a bit to see if i'm wrong :)
- anjc 4y agoGrandmaster moves are likely more optimal than any guesses an average person will make
- Assioss 4y agoI try to carefully pick games where you don't have to guess amongst random bad lines. There could be several logical continuations, and then you could combine variations into one guess to narrow it down. In that sense, some of the same Wordle strats apply. Consequently, most of the positions are taken from games between high-rated players, where their moves are logical or near-optimal. Two of them have featured world champion Magnus Carlsen.
- makoto12 4y agoThat's really cool. I'm rethinking my opinion :) I think it really depends on the positions that you curate. I tried todays one, and managed to get it in 5. so definitely not easy and makes you think a bit more like how players at that level think.
- libraryatnight 4y agoI think this is my problem. I play chess full games only once in awhile, but I play chess puzzles every day on chess.com, so I keep scrutinizing for a "correct" move.
- Enginerrrd 4y agoI actually really disagree. The one I just played, I guessed in four. But the key thing I like about this format is that you're evaluating all the tension points in a position, and then figuring out what the order of operations needs to be. So on my third guess, I got all but the second move right. Then I had to work backwards and forwards to figure the rest out. I quite liked it. Ostensibly, the same is true in a puzzle, but in this format there's more opportunity for trial and error to discover more about the position you might not have seen in the first glance.
- tarentel 4y agoChess puzzles always have one solution. I don't know how this game was picked but the solution to this particular puzzle is the only solution. There are certainly other moves that could be played in this position but they are all losing as far as I can tell. Assuming every position from every game chosen is like this it sort of makes sense but as someone who does a lot of chess puzzles I don't see how this is much different from just normally doing chess puzzles.
- indigo945 4y agoNo, I am pretty sure you are wrong. Rb6 Rc8 .. Rxe6 Rxc7 .. Rxf6 was played in the game, but Rb6 Rc8 .. Qb7 Qe8 .. Rxf6 is an alternative line with the same idea. OK, I just checked, the computer says I'm wrong. I am wrong because black can instead go Rb6 Rc8 .. Qb7 Qc4 .. Rxf6 Qxf1!. Also, you're still at least a bit wrong because the computer thinks since black is already losing, it should go for Rb6 Re8 .. Rxe6 R8xe6, black giving up the queen for the rook in order to protect the bishop in the end. But yes, that's a computer idea.
- anjc 4y agoGreat concept. I'm not doing so well though :) Seems like a good way to internalise notation
- ditesh 4y agoLove it, thanks for creating it!
- mighty_plant 4y agoI wanted to try it but it doesn't work with my Pixel dark mode
- Assioss 4y agoYeah I have gotten some reports that dark mode plugins could mess up the board. If you can turn it off for specific websites, I suggest doing that, and rather use the dark mode on chessguessr.com.
- qsort 4y agoGreat concept! Today's puzzle is kinda easy but I love the game. A couple ideas: - Adjustable time controls? An OTB 90 30 game is not the same as an online 5 0, would be interesting to see the difference. - Adjustable ratings? It's probably bad humor for terrible people, but it would be really funny to try and guess what happens in a low-rated game.
- Assioss 4y agoThanks for the feedback! For now I'm selecting games where they play near-optimal moves or where the continuation is somewhat logical, so that you could narrow down the options by combining several logical continuations into one guess. I think it would be really hard to solve if an illogical bad move appeared in the line. However, since I'm storing the solve percentage of each puzzle, it would be fun trying it now and then to compare the difficulties. Adding OTB games is a good idea. I am thinking of adding some classical games, but I'm not sure if I'll have a new category or just add them to the regular daily ones.
- yreg 4y agoI thought the —guessr suffix was for GeoGuessr-like games and the —dle was for Wordle-like games.
- Assioss 4y agoI bought the domain before I knew what I was gonna do with it :D But I have plans for some extra modes or games that are less Wordle-like. They're not exactly GeoGuessr-like either, although being dropped onto a chess square and finding out whether you're on c3 or g6 could provide some fun!
- derbOac 4y agoFWIW, I think this is a really cool idea but to me it also seemed like the comparison with Wordle was a bit unusual. But I'm fatigued by Wordle variants, so maybe it's just me trying to view it through a different lens.
- hnbad 4y agoBut chessdle doesn't quite roll off the tongue.
- DannyPage 4y agoI went 0/25 for correct moves, but I see by the solution that I did move the correct pieces at times. Perhaps that could be given the yellow color to highlight which pieces are involved? Otherwise novices like me are stuck if they never find that initial move.
- Assioss 4y agoI am planning to add a third color for the correct piece, but wrong move. Just need to find out what to do if it _also_ yellow. Maybe show both colors? I'll figure out something. Thanks for the feedback!
- Misdicorl 4y agoI'd suggest that the current yellow isn't very useful. Right piece wrong move=yellow seems much closer to the spirit for me
- mjs7231 4y agoI was actually in the opposite boat. Right move, wrong time was intuitive and I would be lost if a box was yellow and I actually made a wrong move. Maybe "right piece wrong move" could be a yellow outlined box with grey inside or something.
- navan 4y agoI have seen some other language wordles use yellow or green coloring of upper diagonal part when the consonants is right but wrong sound. That could be an approach. See how to at https://solladal.github.io/wordle-tamil/ https://solladal.github.io/wordle-tamil/. (I don't think there is translation. But pictures should give the idea)
- Assioss 4y agoThat's what I went with. I have implemented this feature now: https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/1413265/180040056-3b06b394-8ca0-4c7b-8793-9bcca5a68a88.png https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/1413265/180040056-..., but haven't deployed it yet. Thanks for the suggestions!
- chippy 4y agolove it, i like chess puzzles but have never been able to play the ones in the newspaper or in books. So its good to undo, and see things visually (I know chess fans do it all mentally though) Didn't win it, got 2 greens and one orange at best!
- tarentel 4y agoChess.com and lichess both have puzzles, the latter are free and you can play through them like this, sort of, except you only make moves for one side.
- synu 4y agoWould love to be able to draw arrows as I think the puzzle through.
- Assioss 4y agoThanks for the feedback!
- WilTimSon 4y agoGood lord, this is by far the toughest of these Wordle variations that I've seen. Doesn't help that I'm rubbish at chess, of course, but still. Creative, though, never would have thought of something like this.
- im3w1l 4y agoI only got green and grey squares before solving it. What does orange signify?
- mjs7231 4y agoCorrect move at the wrong time.
- throwaway23236 4y agoGot it in 4, I really like that at the end you put what game it's from!
- Zizizizz 4y agoNice! Got it in two, hello new daily routine
- hammeiam 4y agoAnybody have a link to the original game? I went 0/25 and could use a hint
- tarentel 4y agoWhite's threatening to win a piece. There's a pretty nasty discovery in the position. Once you find the first move the rest should follow pretty quickly.
- xtracto 4y agoIs it possible to see the right set of moves after failing?
- neogodless 4y agoIn the final scoring modal, the moves are linked: https://lichess.org/J8HKQ0Fy/white https://lichess.org/J8HKQ0Fy/white It's at the same point; press the "Play next move" button in the bottom right.
- jeffrallen 4y agoI misread this as cheese-guesser and, as a Swiss, got super excited!
- borski 4y agoSimilar to Chessle, though that’s just for openings: https://jackli.gg/chessle/ https://jackli.gg/chessle/ Neat!
- Assioss 4y agoThanks for all the feedback! I've now added a third, red color that indicates that the correct piece type was moved, but not necessarily the correct piece. https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/1413265/180053121-4fd20164-9ddc-4767-9758-f3e94f16d7ce.png https://user-images.githubusercontent.com/1413265/180053121-...
- difflens 4y agoGreat idea! I did something similar for a weekend project that folks can checkout at (PauseTheVideo)[https://pausethevideo.vercel.app https://pausethevideo.vercel.app] if they're interested. We're big fans of Agadmator at DiffLens and made that site as a tribute to his videos! I haven't had time to update it with the latest videos, but there are about 10 games currently from the candidates tournament. The idea is to find the best move in the position to win the game! The website is not complete yet but the games are definitely play-able.
- joeframbach 4y agoSuggestion: when I correctly guess the first n moves, the next iteration should autofill those correct moves for me. Don't make me repeat the first n moves I had correct. - downboots 4y agoCreative. So anything with a linked list can be 'wordled'? One thing to watch out for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transposition_(chess) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transposition_(chess)
