    Yes, sorry for being unclear. I'm English, so I tend towards the mealy-mouthed. What I'm trying to say is that sushisource is being a cunt for dehumanizing the person that was killed.

        Sorry about that, I thought my lead-in was obvious and you were playing the straight man :( Still, I stand by what I said. EDIT: OK, OK, so after snoozing on it for ten minutes, perhaps I can see why it might appear that I'm more right than you are to a lesser extent than is truly the case. Even though there's nothing for me to apologise for, perhaps I should at least have taken the high road. What can I say? I'm just reluctant to sit by and stay silent when people seem to blaming the victim so enthusiastically.

          I don't see how "ped" is necessarily an offensive abbreviation (though it's one that normally isn't used), so I don't think you're justified in believing that the commenter is trying to dehumanize the victim.

            If they want to abbreviate "pedestrian", why not "person"? I've never seen anybody use the term "ped" anything other than disparagingly! How should we respond to this attitude? I know what I think, that's for sure: it's crap, and people in charge of operating motorised vehicles should take more care over how they think about people on foot, to ensure that they never behave too carelessly in the heat of the moment. Anyway: I think I've set out my stall here to the extent necessary. You and anybody else may make of it what you will. Drive with care, and for fuck's sake don't kill anybody.

                Right - and in America you're not even allowed to cross the road! To the extent that when a self-driving car runs somebody over, "but but they were in the road" is somehow an adequate defence! If you want to consider this a cultural misunderstanding, fine. What can I do about that? Nothing. But please, before I go, because I can tell I'm not making much of an impact here, let me say it again: drive carefully, and for fuck's sake don't kill anybody. (and please tell the robots too!)

                  As a non native speaker I'm reacting to the use of Ped as well, that paired with the obvious victim blaming that seems to be thrown around a lot, but to a much lesser extent here than in other forums discussing this issue. Driving is a sensitive subject, people take it personal trying to do generalizations about drivers is just going to land you in a land of troubles, almost worse than profanity.

        Well it's more sideways, perhaps even caustic, something like that, I'd say, rather than humorous per se. Still... stiff upper lip. Though I can't believe I'm getting downvoted for reminding people not to kill anybody while behind the wheel :-o

          You're upset for someone using the word "ped" for pedestrian while using a word that's got a dictionary definition of being vulgar and offensive for women? I have to say I'm rather confused. I feel I'm being trolled.

            Actually, in UK slang, that refers to someone who's being stupid. And still, everyone knows what it means in the US, I believe. Edit: Sorry about the ambiguity. I wan't referring to "ped". But rather to the slang that's offensive to women.

              Upon reflection, I wonder where that British term comes from. Maybe it basically means "woman". Reflecting the slur that women are stupid. So it's still sexist, albeit not as vulgar as the US term.

      I agree with you. Vulgarity is justified despite what this place has to say about it. This is something I also noticed about these articles. Some of them not even mention the name of the person, and most of them go into details about self driving cars and stuff. Also most people here..Of course people die everyday. But when you are talking about a specific incident, please don't treat the person involved as if they were just an inanimate object...
