  Presumably as soon as we keep people out of our technology sites as well. Communities are driven by people, at their core. It's a very myopic view of the world that says we can have a state of pure apolitical nature.

Communities are driven by people, at their core" Politics just leads to bullying, oppression, and silencing rather than everyone getting together for the love of technology. When politics is involved, people take sides outside of the actual discussions on technology and it just gets in the way. There are plenty of other forums for these political and personal beliefs. I've seen really good developers being drummed out and bullied from open source project communities based on nothing more than a political opinion. Even look at the ex-Mozilla CEO: No matter how much good he did at the company, it didn't matter because of his personal beliefs. It was also a little ironic that so many people that are against the bullying and oppression of people based on their beliefs turned around and did the exact same thing to that CEO.

If you're the public face for a company like that you don't get the luxury of having back-asswards stances on fundamental human rights issues, sorry. Especially when you operate in a market that's so overwhelmingly liberal in the first place.         "Come about is fair play." You may say it is "fair play", but it really does nothing to help the cause because it's so hypocritical. This sort of behavior only makes innocent people like me having to resort to the same tactics to correct the wrongs in this world...and people that get their lives ruined and or their careers destroyed really can't complain. "Especially when you operate in a market that's so overwhelmingly liberal in the first place. If he was the CEO of an Oil company, maybe it'd be a different story." So, if a christian organization oppressed and bullied a CEO for supporting gay marriage until they quit, it's "fair play". Correct? I'm just trying to see your logic here.

        no. You are missing the point. A group advocating equality and peace can't really be taken seriously when they go ahead and do the exact opposite. actions speak louder than words.

        I see I was silenced once again. No worries. I will just continue to pass the love so to speak until this sort of behavior stops and our communities become more accepting. When you get fired from your job for just a tweet or a belief, you will know where I'm coming from. It's not something I enjoy, I feel it's my duty.

    I didn't really understand his argument as to why it was relevant to SO. Though, I think he probably could have just said "I'm gay. It's my site. I feel like celebrating." and it would be sufficient justification.

    Yes, I get it. Joel is gay. I started reading his blog back in 2000 when it first started and he would constantly mention his boyfriend(s) in his articles. This is irrelevant to technology. I see it the same as constantly preaching my religious views. If I did, it would turn lots of people off. The only reason biased political commentary is accepted is because many in the community agree with it.

  Did you read the link? It was to a direct response from the CEO. In the end it was a community decision.
