Wow, I rarely take Farhad Manjoo's side, but this IT guy sounds like he simply wants to avoid doing his job. He even ruins his excellent point – that sometimes the real enemy is the management who set ridiculous policies for IT to execute – by calling it insane for anyone to go over IT's head and complain to, say, the secretary of state in a meeting held precisely for such questions.
