I spent a lot of time when I was in my early 20s doing consulting on projects that I wasn't very excited about. It's really easy to get stuck in a bad place and you should feel good that you've identified this as a problem for you so early.
It's so easy to lose confidence in yourself when your surroundings don't make you happy. Don't tell yourself that you aren't smart. Read up about Impostor Syndrome (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impostor_syndrome http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impostor_syndrome). Apply to jobs around the world that you'd enjoy even if think are out of your reach -- you'll be surprised. Companies are starved for talented passionate engineers and will pay for relocation and invest time in training.
