  "Job search". You don't even have to lie if you don't want to. Every time I've gone looking for a job without a direct contact I could tap, it took several months. Looking for a job is a long slow process that takes maybe a couple of hours a day, even if you really work at it. It takes much less if you don't particularly push. It can be pretty much a vacation if you want it to be one.

  Explain to whom? The next employer? Just tell them you took a break. Period. But only if they ask.
