Sounds to me like the whole Perl thing all over again where the BBC weren't happy with the standard version so decided to write their own - which meant they could't patch it with standard Perl.
Either that or some department needed to justify their budget or be cut. Typical BBC bureaucracy and a waste of us licence payers money.
- rarepleasues 17y agoAnd they're doing it again with the move to the new technology platform Forge - monkeypatching ZF so that is just a little bit different and writing their own PHP templating language Spectrum. BBC FM&T has a bad case of the NIH.
- foopwoop 17y agoCompletely disagree here. I have worked at the beeb through the good and bad times (arcane scripting languages built on top of mod_perl), there has been a recent and very fast transition to using much more open industry standard technologies. I've been working on the new platform since it was released and 99% of the time have been using pure ZF code. Not sure who makes the tech decisions where you are but I'm seeing no indication of NIH.
- dj2 17y agoAlmost as hilarious as their multi-language 'MVC' approach that they were discussing implementing for a couple of years, I wonder if it's been done yet. I recall them wanting to use php for their views and some weird concoction of Java / Perl / Ruby / Python for everything else.
