None of that makes sense, and the only reasonable explanation I can think of is that maybe they're trying something sneaky. Their app is already more popular than TextSecure[1][2] and available for more platforms. Why in the world they should all of a sudden change protocol (and probably lose some features, lose control over changes in the protocol, etc.) and join to a less popular network?
