Fukushima happened because of a natural disaster, 9.0 earthquake and a tsunami. Chernobyl happened because of poor engineering.
- gmac 13y agoNeither of those causes is so clear-cut. It's not as if tsunamis are unexpected on the Japanese coast, and reactor designs that rely on active safety systems are inherently worrying. Chernobyl was undoubtedly a horrible design, but my understanding was that the proximate cause was human error/idiocy in disbelieving their monitoring systems.
