Curious to hear whether these weird Linux-asymmetries apply to Blu-Ray or online digital media (e.g. Hulu/Netflix) too. I would be willing to accept the fact that DVDs were invented so long ago that some of their restrictions are a little archaic.

These issues absolutely apply to Bluray, and to basically any other format with copyright restrictions. It is not an issue of DVD being invented long ago; the DMCA is what is obsolete here.
