Ask HN: BrowserStack vs VMs - does it hold up?

We need to start conducting more comprehensive browser compatibility but the idea and cost of setting up enough VMs/machines to do this properly is rather intimidating. Have people used BrowserStack (or a similar service)? Are they good enough? Thanks in advance
