I observed the same thing happening when we transitioned from analog land line telephones to everyone having mobile phones. The plain old telephone was crispy clean, and cellphone calls by comparison were just barely intelligible. It's so bad that I'm honestly surprised that texting didn't take over sooner. It wasn't until Apple FaceTime Audio that calls started to sound good again, and it still isn't the default.
