It wasn't necessarily a terrible idea to invest in VR - I mean it was but let's suspend disbelief for a moment - but Meta is not the company that would succeed in that market. Meta is not a hardware company, not really, and is not an "experiences" company. VR would have had to rely on a lot of premium content, and either you have a company like Disney controlling their own ecosystem or who do you think Disney is going to work with, Meta or Apple? I tried to explain to my Meta colleagues with the virtual reality push was absolutely doomed to fail no matter how good the hardware was and this is the same. Nobody is going to look at Meta for a personal assistant, the world has caught on and besides nobody things about Facebook as the place that is useful, that's Google.
