I am hoping you can get pretty far by self studying if your study material is made by experts and vetted by peers, and you are diligent in practicing an hour a day using a practice routine recommended by experts. Personally I am aiming towards becoming a low-intermediate guitar player over the course of a full year by self studying. My biggest fear is that I develop bad habits, but I am hopeful that the bad habits can be trained out of me with a lot of effort during the intermediate phase.
