Notice they don't include ultrasonic and rotating brushes in that statement.

- Topfi 15d agoThey did also make this claim: > Dyson’s brushing action prevents stalling, keeping bristles in constant motion to remove more plaque vs. market leading premium electric toothbrushes in a laboratory test in brush-only variable mode in the hard to reach areas. [0] Maybe one was an actual, independent though Dyson funded study and the other just their internal comparison to competitors? When I last upgraded my electric toothbrush, I read some studies looking into performance of Oral-B and co. and, to a layman, it seemed like most proper independent studies used manual as the base line. - SamBam 15d agoThere isn't great evidence to suggest that electric toothbrushes are much better at removing plaque than manual. E.g. this metaanalysis [1] found basically no difference. There are also studies that show that electric is better, like this meta-analysis that found a small effect [2] and this Cochrane review. [3] What I generally read in articles is that the single biggest thing that makes a difference is brushing for the full 2 minutes, and electric toothbrushes can help with that by having a built-in timer. 1. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38348549/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38348549/ 2. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34877772/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34877772/ 3. https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD002281.pub3/pdf/CDSR/CD002281/CD002281_abstract.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD...

- prodigycorp 15d agoPerhaps there's a selection effect where people who buy electric toothbrushes are pre-disposed to care more about dental health.
- helsinkiandrew 15d agoNo, I would think all trials are random with people assigned brushes > 5068 participants were randomised to receive either a powered toothbrush or a manual toothbrush. Majority of the studies included adults, and over 50% of the studies used a type of powered toothbrush https://www.cochrane.org/evidence/CD002281_poweredelectric-toothbrushes-compared-manual-toothbrushes-maintaining-oral-health https://www.cochrane.org/evidence/CD002281_poweredelectric-t...
- JohnFen 14d agoEvery time I get my teeth cleaned by someone new, they comment that I must be using an electric toothbrush because my teeth are in such good shape. But I don't. I use the least expensive manual toothbrushes I can find. They're always surprised to hear that. I suspect that how good a particular type of toothbrush is depends more on the person's brushing habits than anything about the toothbrush tech.
- jen729w 13d agoI heard (via Steve Novella of the Skeptic's Guide) that there was similarly light evidence to support flossing, but mostly because nobody's bothered doing the studies. The reason for that? It's obvious that flossing is going to help. Obviously brushing away cruft is better than not. So why waste the money on a boring study? I can see the same for the electric toothbrush argument. Of course it's going to be at least as good if not incrementally better than me see-sawing my way around my mouth. > the single biggest thing that makes a difference is brushing for the full 2 minutes, and electric toothbrushes can help with that by having a built-in timer As someone who had toothbrushes for the longest time with a single 2 minute timer, and now has one with 4× 30s timers, I can say that the difference is radical. I don't understand how I got bored in 2 minutes but I don't get bored in 4×30s, but I do not. Every quadrant gets the full time, and twice a day I do it for the full 2 minutes, no exceptions. That wasn't the case before.
