I thought that untreated rabies was almost invariably fatal. The symptoms are quite obvious. Is it possible that there are a lot of asymptomatic rabies cases, who end up dying from some other cause?

That's actually the thought I ended up having: could there be asymptomatic rabies that never go noticed or reported?
