Google Maps Faces Fury for Caving to Trump
- bearjaws 19d agoAlways funny to me how people expected Google to do anything else other than roll over. Should be a lesson to the dems next term, either extort the tech giants, the mere threat of the government taking action against Google makes them jump on these dumb name changes. Otherwise, get them on their side to change the law to prevent this kind of shit show ever again. It's pretty clear you could do serious damage to a corporation as the president and get away with it, and that should change.

- andsoitis 19d agoIt'll pass.
- ThrowawayR2 19d agoThe number of people fulminating on HN despite the guideline forbidding it is really getting out of hand.
- eudamoniac 18d agoIt is certainly worse than it used to be. At least they are usually flagged.
- SlightlyLeftPad 19d agoOne silver lining about all this is that at least we got relentless prosecution against sandwich throwers. A precedent has been set for any and all hoagie heroes or throwers of sandwiches. The real mockery is that the Biden administration didn’t have the strength to send a firm message to the corrupt, lawless, unpatriotic, horrible people, sandwich throwers.
- phren0logy 19d agoA similar story that came out around the time of the “Gulf of America“ debacle basically just said that the database they use for naming bodies of water had been updated, and therefore that carried through to Maps. So it wasn’t really a decision one way or the other, it was a continuation of an existing policy of where names come from.

- sidibe 19d agoThey could just not do it. Nothing would happen. It's a little moronic that they act so hands off. I get it having a policy is nice for actual controversies between nations but one person wants this (who has probably never used Google Maps), it would be harmless for them to ignore it but instead they piss off half of one country and all of the other. Complete lack of judgment from whoever made this change happen
- royal__ 19d agoWoah hold on buddy, that take is way too reasonable for an internet forum!
