Tobacco and alcohol are scientifically proven carcinogens, yet they are sold ubiquitously in the [western] world. I would argue they are more dangerous than social medias. Yet we don't see any push in banning tobacco and alcohol for 'everyone'.
- rabfu 1mo agoWe won't ban any of all these things because there are people with political power that make fortunes out of them. Whether that's alcohol, social media, tobacco or otherwise. We will not go for the proper solution, not because it's not the proper solution but because powerful people won't allow it. If you do look at the things we have indeed banned, you will find that they are mostly coming from outside our countries. It's not cut and dry, but it's very geopolitical pretty often.
- UpsideDownRide 1mo agoAlcohol story is a lot more than just it being a good business, in vino veritas and all. There is a huge cultural aspect around it for better or worse.
- iamnothere 1mo agoI don’t make money off alcohol, in fact I rarely drink it, but I still wouldn’t want to ban it. I don’t know who your “we” is here.
- rdm_blackhole 1mo agoYou can't ban alcohol because it's been proven that it doesnt work or have you forgotten about the prohibition era? You can't ban the sale of tobacco either because its been proven that any attempt to soft-ban it like they have done is Australia by raising the prices enormously has simply created a black market that the government has no control over. Finally, the war on drugs which has cost hundred of billions of dollars worldwide has completely and utterly failed. You can get drugs delivered to your door step in any major capital of the western world today. The quality is better than before and the delivery is fast and discreet.
