I got my motorcycle license so that I could split lanes when I lived in California. It's legal in the sense that there's no mention of it in the books. So you can split lanes as long as you're not being reckless. Some car drivers had a problem with it and when they saw you coming up behind them they'd move into your space to block you. Bizarre.

I thought this was just a thing until I moved from Cal to Arizona and people would get really mad about it until I asked someone at work and learned it's illegal.

And the convenience is for other people as well: a motorcycle that is filtering is taking up one less 'slot' in the lane that can fit an extra car. The more people that get out of cars into other forms of transportation (motorcycle/scooter, bicycle, transit) allows the folks that "have" to take an automobile (car, van, truck) more space. The whole point of our infrastructure is to move people (and goods) and not to move cars.

That’s supposing the motorcyclist would drive a car instead Bike are a bit more space efficient than cars but not by a fair margin, especially when parked because they don’t properly pack and piles up as much as bicycles. Public transport and walking are the best IMHO, you don’t even need to park.
