Yes, I know many. Of course everyone has minor mental health problems but I know many who have basically cured mental health problems from depression to crippling OCD. None of them did it purely with counciling but with a vast combination of life experiances, including becoming more prosperous and being able to afford to excercise and enjoy a good diet and not have to worry about losing everything and starving to death (this was a big one for mental health), having children, success giving them self confidence, growing older and having their hormones change, having time seperate them from trauma, drugs, legal and illegal, hooking up with someone who somehow made them feel better, study of human culture, history and psychology to get a new perspective on themselves, and finally finishing their dissertations.
- perpetuallunch 1mo ago> Of course everyone has minor mental health problems I think this is an extremely dangerous position to take. We’re all flawed, the human condition and all that, but I don’t believe that necessarily translates to ’minor mental health problems’.
- joshuamorton 1mo agoOn the other hand, you're approaching tautology with what you seem to be implying here, which is "flaws or challenges that you can fix yourself aren't mental health problems".
- perpetuallunch 1mo agoThere’s no such thing as “mental health issues”. There is such a thing as the “Mental Health Industrial Complex”. How did humans evolve and survive for hundreds of thousands of years without “mental health issues” and suddenly 23% of children in public schools have a diagnosis.
- fatbird 1mo agoThe same way they survived and evolved for hundreds of thousands of years with cancer and different bacterial infections and viruses and congenital defects: they suffered from them, sometimes died from them. They didn't lack mental health issues, they just lived or died with them unaddressed or poorly addressed. What a stupid argument.
