commit is 370MB.. If I hear that Win11 uses 3GB of RAM idling, I really get shivers... WTF?! How is that even possible? Bloat is astronomical and yet.. Most people just does NOT care...
- joe_mamba 3mo ago> I have currently 2 browsers open and my memory commit is 370MB.. In what context? >If I hear that Win11 uses 3GB of RAM idling Modern Gnome and KDE distros with batteries included also idea at around 2GB RAM which is a useless metric anyway as Windows 11 also preloads frequently used takes and apps on boot.
- zahlman 3mo ago> Modern Gnome and KDE distros with batteries included also idea at around 2GB RAM Really? I'm seeing 1.3 for Mint/Cinnamon.

- zahlman 3mo agoThe point is that I find it difficult to believe that Gnome/KDE are that much worse. Please consider being more kind and charitable to others, before you make your own demands.

Just because you find something hard to believe doesn't mean you're right about it. >Please consider being more kind and charitable to others, before you make your own demands. I only demand people talk in good faith. Is that too much to ask for? If I talk about Toyotas and people disagree with my take but use Lamborghinis as examples instead of the Toyotas I was originally talking about, that's a bad faith argument.
- drnick1 3mo agoI recently installed Arch Linux on a fairly old (but not ancient) Intel T2 Mac, with the GNOME DE, and it uses less than 1.5GB of RAM. I went for the standard gnome package which as far as I can tell is "batteries included." That leaves about 6.5GB for programs, which I think is acceptable.
- anthk 3mo agoAdd ZRAM https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/ZRAM https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/ZRAM
- prmoustache 3mo agoLess than that, between 900MB and 1.2GB and that's due to file and stuff indexation. The good thing on Linux and BSDs is you can swap for a light wm/compositor and your back below 150MB idle.

- zahlman 3mo agoIt is not "bad faith" to assert experiences that differ from yours. "Bad faith" is (per Wikipedia) > a sustained form of deception which consists of entertaining or pretending to entertain one set of feelings while acting as if influenced by another.
- joe_mamba 3mo agoThat didn't answer my original question: which modern batteries-included linux distro competing with macos or windows 11 idles at 150mb? Hence why it's a bad faith comment. It moves the goalposts to throws bs accusations without facts to back it up as a valid argument.
- prmoustache 3mo agoAny distro. You just install a very light display manager like cdm(or no dm) and a light window manager/compositor (icewm, windowmaker, fluxbox i3/sway). I tested it on Fedora. I tend to use Gnome as a main desktop s I like all the bell and whistles but use lighter config on VMs to save on RAM use. I reckon you could probably go below 100MB with a distro that doesn't use systemd. Have a bit of decency and try it before talking about bad faith.
- joe_mamba 3mo ago>I tested it on Fedora. And did you get below 150mb ram usage in Fedora? Can you show any proof of this or are making stuff up? >I reckon you could probably 'I reckon you could proabaly' is not proof of anything. I tested AntiX linux couldn't get below 150mb and that's in no way a competitor to Fedora with a modern DE. >Have a bit of decency and try it before talking about bad faith. No, you have the decency and post proof of your claims. You're the one with the "sub 150mb" claim, it's your responsibility to prove it, not mine.
- Borg3 3mo agoWhat do you mean what context? Just move yourself 10 years in past and see how RAM much web browsing used.. There is just no sane reason why it balooned so much. Of course, progress needs to be done. Better graphics, more data.. But now all the consumption goes into shitty decoration with is useless and waste resources. Other big usage is all that ads and tracking shit behind the scene..
