That is great advice on how to hire mindreaders. While the first idea (explaining something concisely) is defensible, the second (testing if people will 'stay on topic' when deliberately asked about something else) is just crazy.
- danielweber 14y agoI put a piece of paper on the desk in front of them. It has the number "3" with a big red X through it. Then I hold a baseball bat in a threatening position and tell them to give me an integer between 1 and 10. This technique works wonders, as I'm able to filter out the 90% of candidates who are losers. Spoiler: the right answer is 8.
- nookiemonster 14y ago+1 would read again. OP is performing cargo-cult interviewing. Hiring is a process. You just can't know someone after your 1/8th segment of an interview day for the candidate. The hires I've made have been with people I've known for years and have a back story of execution. This kind of "mind-hacking" interview style is masturbatorial. I have worked with too many great minds who would fail in this situation to pull a stunt like this. OP also readily admits that he's from microsoft. This kind of crap is a part of the culture that has been ruining that company. Anyone who takes this advice should make sure they understand "caveat emptor."
