  Why? Deployed en masse it's the perfect surveillance mechanism. Ever heard of the east-german STASI collecting 'sniff-samples' to be able to use just in case, for the dogs sniffing out dissidents? What if you are the nail which is standing out, one day, for whichever reason? Enjoy being hammered back in, like a good sheeple should?

    Interesting point! I hadn’t really thought about it in terms of surveillance. For me the appeal was more about comfort and safety — things like detecting gas leaks, fires, or other hazardous smells. In that context, I wouldn’t feel any downside. But yes, how it’s used will matter a lot.
