I wonder if they did eat some plants, but just didn’t get enough fiber? I eat no fiber (strict carnivore) but have no problem with regular bowel movements.

- shermantanktop 1y agoIirc from “Undaunted Courage,” a daily diet consisted of 10 pounds of bear meat, for men who were burning thousands of extra calories a day.
- sandspar 1y agoFrom that description, undaunted courage sounds like an apt title.
- messe 1y agoWhy the strict carnivore diet? That is, if you don't mind me asking.
- cbdevidal 1y agoHealth reasons. I lost 50 pounds, and no more career-threatening shoulder pain. Weirdest side effect: Mosquito bites no longer itch
- rsynnott 1y agoThey're a cat.
- hinkley 1y agoYou’ve never seen cats near a house plant?
- rsynnott 1y agoCats will practice herbivorism strictly only when it comes with an opportunity to annoy a human.
- hinkley 1y agoHeh. Technically not true, but practically yes. If I recall, they can handle about 5% veg in their diet. The funny thing is that wheat grass at the supermarket is cheaper, larger, and in better shape than the “cat grass” as the pet store and it’s the same stuff.
- hedgehog 1y agoThey may not have understood the vegetation well enough, and stuck to meat out of caution. Apparently when they got close to the west coast they tried eating camas and got very ill the first time because they didn't prepare it properly. Lots of ways to go wrong when you are in an unfamiliar area (see also: death camas).
- b112 1y agoI think such a diet just means you need to drink more water than your body expects. Meat digestion seems to take more water.
- jeffwass 1y agoI’m curious to know what your diet is like. Eg, if you are only eating meat, do you eat more bones and sinews than the usual omnivore to get enough “roughage” for digestion? Eg, birds at a falconry can’t be fed just the usual bird “meat”, they need to have the skin and feathers attached which is essential for their digestive tract.
- cbdevidal 1y agoNo bones, unless I miss one in the can of salmon. Mostly just threeish pounds of beef every day. Just passed five years. Not tempted to cheat because I’m stuffed all the time lol. Got inspired from Jordan Peterson’s daughter. A dear friend told me about it and I thought why not give it a try. Five years later, still going.
