"While" not "whereas"

  Perhaps. I think it’s perfectly correct English, personally. If you’re American then your grammar rules might differ, I don’t know… “Whereas” can be used at the start of a sentence to introduce two contrasting clauses - in this case the first being his own statement, and the second being my rather more cynical money-based reasoning for his continuing wonderful personality.
