Ask HN: We Need More Librarians
I often see documentation getting out of hand. Structure not being followed, things being misplaced, and outdated. Not public libraries, but the role of a librarian to keep company knowledgebases intact is critical today. Thoughts on why there hasn't been a focus here? Or has there?
- bigyabai 1y agoYou can pay a technical writer to do that stuff, but I don't really ever see that in today's org structures.
- uptownhr 1y agoThat is true, but feels like a miss as it's a different specialty to write good docs vs organizing and grooming docs.
- caitbit 1y agoas companies scale they hire ops folks or bring in a platform (notion etc) to fix it but in my experience knowledge / info changes so quickly that it can be fruitless to keep it up to date. basic organization and structure is important however. I'd love for someone to actually solve this issue at scale :)

- apothegm 1y ago1. Because solving those problems isn’t a priority in terms of how to spend finite funds. 2. Because most people don’t know that there is such a field as library science let alone that what librarians are trained to do isn’t about borrowing novels and saying “ssssh!”
