The BEAM VM is generally terrible at any computationally heavy task. But what it lacks in performance, it makes up for in stability built-in to Erlang's OTP framework. It's also "difficult" to integrate with existing C programs such as system drivers due to BEAM's execution model. It's possible to do, but there are a lot of foot guns & you have to be careful.
