Jeff Heer did some work a few decades to generalize into 'scented widget' (http://vis.stanford.edu/papers/scented-widgets http://vis.stanford.edu/papers/scented-widgets). With systems like DuckDB it's now even easier to implement them into various visual analytic systems.
