Ah the slippery "last refuge of scoundrels", that we all believe we
naturally posses.
Once I was dissecting this unpopular piece of "duty guidance" [0], a
stinking heap of twitching net curtains to obscure the beaten body of
cultural identity based anti-terrorism. But at it's faintly
still-beating heart was a "List of British Values" [1].
As I read this impressive list of British Values (remember), "doggedly
never surrendering", "championing the underdog" etc, I heard God Save
The King playing (or maybe that theme from The Archers) and tears of
pride welled up.. and then I spotted the shtick... it's just all the
good shit everybody believes their tribe should, and by-and-large
does do. Americans have one too where they're generous and warm
hearted simple folk... Did no one think to compare these self-assessed
manifestos?
It's the twisting of that into a list that your country uniquely
represents and defends that's the bloody masterstroke of Patriotism.
