IMO, if your star developers aren’t writing readable, maintainable code (at least most of the time, some things are inherently complex), I don’t think it’s right to call them star developers. FWIW, the problem you’re talking about isn’t one I’ve encountered very often at most of the companies I’ve worked at, and I’ve worked at small startups and large enterprises. I genuinely wonder why that is.
