Jack Dorsey Leaves Bluesky Board and Calls X 'Freedom Technology'
- kuekacang 2y agoWth I was just binging atp.fm and I am currently on the topic of the twitter exodus and bluesky/mastodon alternatives and this news drops.
- paulryanrogers 2y agoDirect quote from Xitter: > don’t depend on corporations to grant you rights. defend them yourself using freedom technology. > (you’re on one) Which is strange since I don't think X actually federates, and its "free speech" seems a mix of pay-to-play and "don't speak ill of the king". Perhaps Dorsey was cross posting from BlueSky? Or he made nice with Musk and is trying to throw him a bone?
- saalweachter 2y agoDorsey maintained his ownership of 2.4% of Twitter through the sale, no?

- dagmx 2y agoYeah, especially because on Twitter you’re at the whim of effectively a single individual who has repeatedly proven to not be congruent. I read elsewhere that he moved to Nostr which is what he might have cross posted from. Nostr would meet his criteria.

- burkaman 2y agoNo he doesn't even have a Bluesky account. This is an absolutely wild quote, imagine if someone made him explain what magical technology Twitter has that grants you rights without having to depend on the Twitter Corporation. He's even pinned this, he really thinks people will believe it. Edit: He did post this on Nostr as well, which makes a little more sense: https://primal.net/e/note1awa6kyufetxrvsl5j0s583hzxrcuah9demk8y5yyz6k7lhun9knq60rgtr https://primal.net/e/note1awa6kyufetxrvsl5j0s583hzxrcuah9dem.... I still don't understand why he pinned it on Twitter unless he's intentionally being ironic.
- chefkd 2y agoI'm not from the US so I could be misunderstanding the situation but I think free speech in this context means the ability to say anything (good or bad) against groups of people without moderation. Twitter is more lenient towards specific rhetoric same with all the social sites and their affiliations
- tmaly 2y agoGiven Google and Apple controlling the biggest app stores, X is forced to have moderation of some form if they want their app to remain listed.
- JadeNB 2y ago> Twitter is more lenient towards specific rhetoric same with all the social sites and their affiliations Under Musk, Twitter is lenient towards specific sorts of rhetoric that align with, or at least don't conflict with, his own leanings, and very harsh on certain other types of rhetoric, perhaps most notably criticism of Musk.

- ynniv 2y agoI hate to break it to Bloomberg, but this was posted to both nostr and X. One of those seems more likely than the other to be "freedom technology". A cynic might say that they knew full well, and took advantage of the ambiguity. Sign things, and share them on relays. - Yoric 2y agoCould he be speaking of "the web"?
- kstrauser 2y agoRealistically, what’s this mean for Bluesky? If Jack’s out, I’m supposing the writing’s on the wall and there’s not much else to do but write the incredible journey blog.
- rsynnott 2y agoI... don't see why? Like, he was just a board member, right? It's not particularly clear why him leaving would be a major problem.
- kstrauser 2y agoMy impression was that much of Bluesky’s excitement came from it being the next big thing, from the guy who made Twitter!, which you and I know isn’t accurate, but that’s how a lot of its headlines and blurbs appeared to me.
- rsynnott 2y agoTbh, most of the media coverage of it has been "this is the Twitter replacement where we, the journalists, are going, and therefore it is the best Twitter replacement"; if anything I think the Dorsey association was seen as a little embarrassing. Like, it's hard to see this hurting use.
- kstrauser 2y agoHuh, you raise a good point. I'd seen plenty of that, too. I still predict this will play out in the tech press as bad news for Bluesky, if only so that journalists can hope to get credit for their hot take.
- steveklabnik 2y agoHe deleted his account a long time ago. If anything, it’s a positive; BlueSky continues to grow.
