The morning after Gore/Lieberman lost the 2000 election, Joe went to a local diner for breakfast. There was a huge line of supporters there to show their appreciation and offer support after the loss. This was on CSPAN and I became mesmerized watching him work the line. With no one whispering in his ear, he talked to family after family after family and clearly knew them all. Any sense of sympathy for his loss was quickly flipped to concern and interest for the person in front of him. He would ask about an ailing mother, a daughter in her first year of college, a son starting a new job, etc... He knew all the names and important milestones that were happening in their lives. It just went on and on. One can argue about policies or whatever, but this was a senator who was in touch with his constituents and had incredible recall and empathy. I've still never seen anything like it. RIP.
