Of all the features that you have listed, I use only the syntax highlighting. I have never tried to turn it off for longer than a few minutes when it worked. When it is broken (e.g. wrongly coloring stuff) I sometimes turn it off, but this is usually not long enough to find out if I am really better without the colors. Turning off the syntax highlighting is still one of the things that I would like to try out some day...
