About 20 years ago I worked for a bank that processed checks (checks would come in from businesses and they would be sorted and reconciled here). The check processing machine was a 26-bay IBM check sorter/document reader (the IBM 2956). This machine then was nearly 30 years old, was new to the company yet cost $250k, and needed weekly maintenance from an IBM tech. They retired that machine finally 6 years ago.
