Somewhere along the way, I came to the belief that the rebuilt One World Trade Center in NYC (1776 ft because we count the antennae as a spire) had been protected by a special law passed forbidding other buildings from exceeding that height so that it would retain a record height in honor of the 9/11 attack victims and responders. Does anyone else remember that being a thing? I can't find references after a few web searches and I'm trying to decide if I'm the only one or if this is a Mandela Effect thing.

That would have to be a federal law passed by congress and signed by some president. Maybe some NYC law, but I can't imagine any other city in the US agreeing to that just because of some form of honor. If it turns out this is a thing, I will be thoroughly disgusted that we've spent effort on that vs something actual useful to the people.
