Many mid size cities along rivers like Donau/Isar/Inn are worth visiting like Regensburg (old historic city)/Passau/Rosenheim/Landshut/Augsburg. Some of the lakes in southern part of Bavaria like Chiemsee (Fraueninsel)/Starnberg/Tegernsee have some charm. I personally think Salzburg and Garmisch-Partenkirchen are special as the sit right at the foot of the alps.
