This sounds similar to what The Asylum does (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheAsylum http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheAsylum); they make extremely cheap knockoffs of big-name movies, like "Transmorphers", and rely on people not paying attention to inadvertently buy or rent their movies. It's apparently incredibly profitable.
