I don't think influencing is the issue but being seen as defying them intentionally. The defence industry and big oil are seen as "unsantiory" but otherwise "allies" of the US government. A means to an end. (At least that's my Perception) Google, Apple, Meta etc seem to be weirdly incompetent at playing the political publicity game.
