It isn't like farmed salmon is a crucial staple food without substitutes - nobody will starve without it. There are plenty of other fish breeds that are less damaging across their production lifecycle.
Farmed salmon is a luxury good and we shouldn't be harming the environment for that.
- chmod600 3y agoWhat other fish do you recommend?
- ClumsyPilot 3y agoAnchovy, Herring, any fish that is not at the top of the food chain. Salmon is a predator, it's like eating tigers.
- ceejayoz 3y agoUnlike tigers, salmon are definitely not at the top of the food chain.

- riku_iki 3y ago> Anchovy, Herring are they farmable on industrial scale to feed humanity?
- MiguelX413 3y agoIrrelevant, because we're not seeking to replace such a staple in the first place, as was already previously stated.
- riku_iki 3y agoI didn't get who are those "we" and where it was stated and by who, and why that who is an absolute authority in this discussion that any other opinions are labeled as "irrelevant"
- ClumsyPilot 3y agoWhat do you think salmon eat? For every 1 kg of salmon waten by a person 5-10 KG of anchovy or other fish is eaten by salmon.
- riku_iki 3y agoI am not sure that fish(like very small anchovy) is in grade to effectively feed humans.
- ClumsyPilot 3y agoWhat does this mean? Anchovies are normal food sold at the supermarket. https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/306930957 https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/306930957 https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/310103367 https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/310103367
- riku_iki 3y agothat's likely larger and more mature presorted units. Salmon can eat smaller ones. You can tell from the price that those cost more than actual salmon. I am not expert, I am just speculating that if you dig into details, picture can be very different.
- ClumsyPilot 3y agoThis outright silly, salmon tastes better and thats why people eat it. There isn't some great mystery about small fish being less edible. I regularly go to the fish market, small seafood like anchovi and shrimp can be bought 4 times cheaper than salmon.
- pvaldes 3y agonot. We can't breed this so is a non-solution. Keeping them alive in aquariums is very difficult.
