- shuckles 3y agoThe poster wants to imply the population is black Americans even though similar ethnic groups in other countries don’t have nearly the same violent crime rates. Either there are structural factors at play or black Americans are somehow a specific distinct population from people of that diaspora around the world. This is where the analytical skepticism of people who insinuate these ideas tends to fall apart.
- TheCaptain4815 3y agoWow, almost like culture matters. Structural factors for a single population out of dozens of distinct ones to kill, rape, rob, loot, riot, at rates 10x+ higher than others. Funny how the same factors end up applying in Brazil, Europe, and even Japan.
- shuckles 3y agoAt least try to bring some evidence when casually spouting random racist falsehoods, we’re an empirically driven discussion forum.
- noptd 3y agoI'm not the OP but equating criticism of the *culture* of a *subset* of a given demographic with racism is an extremely uncharitable take.
- shuckles 3y agoWhat’s uncharitable about defaulting to thinking someone implying black people’s culture makes them murderous around the world is being racist? The “given demographic” they were specifying was a race!

- shuckles 3y agoThis is what I mean by strangely inconsistent demands for intellectual rigor. Not only does your summary of that article ignore that Central and South American countries with predominantly Latino populations dominate the top charts, but also it totally misses the actual point which is black Americans have higher crime rates than other countries with large numbers of black people which is a different claim than countries with large number of black people are low crime. In fact, every demographic has higher crime rates in America than comparable countries. White Americans are much, much more violent than Europeans, Asian Americans are more violent than Asians, and black Americans are way more violent than Africans. The only ethnic group with lower crime rates in the USA is Latinos, which is mostly an indictment of Central America. Must be the radioactive water messing up the genes!
- Georgelemental 3y agoPeople I know who have spent a lot of time working all throughout Africa, say that Africans tend to be a lot more "tough" culturally about crime compared to African-Americans, especially in rural areas. When you are living at the edge of subsistence, you have absolutely zero tolerance for bullsh*t. You can't afford to. But in America there is much more of a safety net, and crime problems can get worse while still allowing the system to persist. There are also issues with American culture more broadly, that as you note affect all demographics. As a country we have always emphasized freedom and independence; I generally like this view, but it does lead to some problems as well.
- TheCaptain4815 3y agoThat's actually not true, we have American states that are 99% white and are a good test, they compare favorably to European states with the same demographics crime wise. (look at the north east) Why isn't West Virginia, a dirt poor state that's almost fully white, a crime ridden state?
- mjx0 3y agoAh. I had guessed as much, but figured that was an awful assumption to apply to someone. Now, looking at their post history, I see they also advocate for the idea that similar groups of people are less intelligent based on their skin color. Truly disappointing.

- horns4lyfe 3y agoI mean…they are a distinct population. The history of racial discrimination in the US has resulted in a very different black population than that of other countries.
- peanuty1 3y agoThe poster is referring to a subset of African-Americans that have the highest crime rates of any demographic in the US. To be clear, I am neither agreeing nor disagreeing with the poster.
