TL;DR, he purchased an apple orchard and started applying permaculture principals to create sustainable business. For example, he took every third apply tree and cut it down to replace with a "Nitrogen Fixing" sort of tree in addition planting other smaller plants and shrubs in between the trees (see "syntropic agroforestry") and overall he's had tremendous success.
