Out of interest, are there any other groups where you believe that it would be dangerous for members of that group to be "aware of their ethnicity"? Or is it only Jews?

This is a description, not a prescription. Also do note the adjectives. I'd say it is universal for any group, but given particular circumstances in the actual state of the world its salience varies widely.
