I think you like your reasoning kept oversimplified too. I like the exact way the simple things as OP, eg: for media player I use android total commander:) But the reasonong is just wrong. The problem with the phone is that it's extremely hard to find quality sw. Exactly in a way as finding good, dedicated hw. The problem is the same: there is no review site niether of them. PS: of course there are lots of details, like when hw flaws come to surface and users could write that to others, there is a new hw model. And lots and lots of them, no chance thet a testing company could test enough.
