I think the mystery and ambiguity of our dreams is what makes them so powerful. I personally prefer to let my dreams be, and explore them immediately after waking. I write them down in complete detail first, then slowly let their meanings reveal themselves to me. Inevitably the meaning (by that I mean the relation to my waking life) comes through in the details that seemed inconsequential until I actually wrote them all down. Perhaps if I got to pick the nominal subjects of my dreams, my dream work and exploration would not change that much. But it definitely wouldn't be the same if I were to be able to script everything that happened.
