what about alternatives like mapbox? It seems to have its users

  Maps - from my search of recent articles about it, it seemed that their Maps service has become quite costly too. Perhaps I'm wrong, we're still looking into it. Data - it seems it's mostly OSM, which then leads us to thinking we're simply better off creating an OSM db ourselves then + put that content into a maps service that helps with tile serving. But then I'm not sure how cost effective it will be.

    The underlying data of MapBox is 99.99% OSM (with some other datasets used for things like country borders). They do have a very nice vector-map viewer (previous versions were open-source, the newer releases have a more restrictive license that requires a subscription to their tile service). If you just need map tiles, there are specialized providers (e.g. thunderforest.com) that have far more competitive pricing.
