Ask HN: Do you think Meta could become the next AOL?

Based on some of the comments in this thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33538742 I thought it might be interesting to have a discussion comparing Meta's strategy of owning VR as a platform with how AOL tried to become the internet platform in the 90s.
