  I’m sure the experiment could be repeated with correct data processing. The authors probably won’t do it, unless they think it will provide a positive result.

    That sort of thinking is surely a great loss to scientific progress? You need a few goes by different labs to show failure, so you know that if you were going to try that technique you need to think again, surely? Sometimes one should probably even do experiments that seem self-evidently futile.
