I remember playing games along the same lines (a few years earlier than the author) on the Amiga buried in free game archives and collections. Or possibly early networked systems; my memory's cloudy. I haven't seen them again. I've always wondered if some of them were partially finished personal projects that never were released widely enough to survive.
