TikTok is having longer and longer videos. TikTok will become something else. The machine learning only works for short videos. For long videos, you need social graphs to match videos to users who like them. I expect that both technologies will be combined.

- mal-2 4y agoDoes YouTube organic discovery work for anyone besides toddlers? I can't remember a time I was suggested or autoplayed a video that I actually was interested in.
- closedloop129 4y agoRight now, YT doesn't have competition, but they will have to improve once TikTok has the content. According to his parallel discussion [1], suggestions on YT were much better. - anticensor 4y agoLike, subscribe and comment are all social interactions and they indeed are counted in recommendations.
- vecter 4y agoThat is not the traditional definition of a social graph, which is connecting people who know each other in real life.
- cwkoss 4y agoWhy do you need social graphs for long videos? I'm not sure why that would be the case.
- closedloop129 4y agoIt's becoming more popular to start a long video with a short teaser but in general, long videos need some time to reveal their value. If you show long videos randomly to everybody then the perceived noise increases which may reduce user engagement.
