  Good questions. There is thorough scientific evidence showing that: 1) Mindset (positive or negative) has direct effects on physiology 2) Strong social bonds and a sense of community is beneficial to health, while the inverse is detrimental 3) Meditation and mindfulness can positively affect physiology 4) Chronic stress is detrimental to health (and having an existential terror of death is surely a source of conscious or unconscious chronic stress for many) These are all things which religion and spirituality can help with.
